The Atlantic Institute is proud to present our series of discussion nights! The next discussion will be focused on the TEDTalk "The Power of Vulnerability" by Brene Brown

Brené Brown studies human connection -- our ability to empathize, belong, love. In a poignant, funny talk, she shares a deep insight from her research, one that sent her on a personal quest to know herself as well as to understand humanity. A talk to share.
We sincerely hope you'll join us as we watch the video and then discuss this Talk in an open and honest setting.

 February TEDTalk

febtalk1

The Atlantic Institute of Columbia recently held an event in our series of TED Talk discussions on February 26th, 2020. This month’s Talk was “We are all connected by the spectacular birth, death, and rebirth of stars,” by Enrico-Ramirez Ruiz. This fascinating Talk by an astrophysicist detailed how we are all composed of the same material on a cosmic level. Part of the meaning of this talk is that on a grander scale we are all the same, so our differences seem inconsequential.

We had an intimate discussion on the greater mysteries of the cosmos, how we all are connected by the air we breathe and the basic elements that compose us. One of the key takeaways was the idea that what separates us all are purely societal constructs; we create the lines that divide us since the only thing that really differentiate us from one another are differences in appearance. It was a truly revelatory talk and we are thankful to our guests and the Cayce/West Columbia Library for hosting us.

Interfaith TEDTalk Dialogue Night January 28, 2020

tedjan

The Atlantic Institute wants to thank John Starino, our guests, and the Interfaith Partners of South Carolina for making our first TED discussion of the year a success! “Reconnecting with Compassion” was a great way to start our series of TED discussions and everyone in attendance was engaged with Krista Tippett’s fascinating Talk.

“Reconnecting with Compassion” introduced the concept of compassion being viewed as a weakness and challenged that assertion by explaining why compassion could be seen instead as strength. Being compassionate and willing to try to understand others helps us connect with each other on a much deeper level, and we hope our guests in attendance will walk away from this event with that in mind.

John Starino led the discussion and helped shine the light on why compassion is strength by engaging the audience with thought provoking questions. We are so grateful to continue this series of discussions in 2020. Stay tuned as we begin preparing for the next one!

September TEDTalk

On September 19, 2019 the Atlantic Institute of Columbia just finished up its September TEDTalk Dialogue Night! The Danger of a Single story by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She advocates for a greater understanding of stories because people are complex, saying that by only understanding a single story, one misinterprets people, their backgrounds and their histories. We had a rousing discussion that followed, and we are happy to share this Talk with our guests, friends, and neighbors. the Lexington County Library for hosting us, everyone who joined us, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and TED for this great talk!
